:IT Te ra - December 31,2008 OUR COMMUNITY Page 9 i Review From page 8 • The annual Boys and Girls Club of Sweet Home auction raised approximately $109.000. • High school boys won their first district golf title. • WRR was given three months to remove its fiber inventory, the material DEQ calls waste, during a conditional use permit revocation hearing by the city Planning Commission. • High school boys won their first state track and field title since 1983 and their first district title since 2003. • Sherrie Sprenger won the House District 17 Republican nomination. Opponents included Bruce Cuff. Marc Lucca and Linn County Commissioner Cliff Wooten. She would go on to face Democrat Dan Thackaberry. • Will Tucker defeated Michael Spasaro in the Republican primary for county commissioner. He would go on to face Democrat Gordon Kirbey Jr. • Fred Girod won the Republican nomination for Senate District Nine against Sarah Arcune and Herman Joseph Baurer. Bob McDonald defeated Steven H. Frank for the Democratic nomination. • Incumbent Roger Nyquist. Republican. and Pete Boucot, Democrat. ran unopposed in the primary for county commissioner. • Linn County officials formally opened Calkins Park and boat ramp on the southeastern shore of Foster Lake. • Sweet Home Police Department reorganized, dedicating two officers to traffic enforcement. • The city awarded a contract to Pacific Excavation, Inc., to build a new water treatment plant for $8.6 million. June • Police arrested a woman after she allegedly reported shooting her husband, leading to a standoff that lasted a couple of hours. Debra Tertou was arrested and charged with two counts of initiating a false report and one count of disorderly conduct. • To solve the ongoing odor problem, the city and OMI, which operates the city's water and wastewater treatment plants, thickened the bio-filter on the odor- causing basin at the wastewater plant. After several weeks, the improvements took effect, and the odor that started in late 2006 and plagued the west end of town faded. • The SHARE committee became a branch of SHEDG. • Some 160 students graduated from SHHS at the first indoor graduation ceremony since the early 1990s. It was moved indoors because of the threat of rain and cold weather, touching off opposition from the graduates, who were concemed they would not be able to have all of their visiting family members attend. • Judy Moulton moved home after Danny McCubbins led a group of local contractors and volunteers in a renovation of the living area of the Church Mouse, the old home of Bethel Lutheran Church and an art gallery. The home had been deteriorating, and a number of volunteers stepped up at the end of 2007 to renovate it. • Zach Jackson and Shelbey Gillespie were named freshmen of the year at SHHS. • A wet spring indicated that local lakes Green Peter and Foster would be kept full for much of the summer. July • About 20 teens helped clean up Sankey Park as part of a project by the city's Youth Advisory Council. They held a party afterward on Weddle Bridge, including music, food and a raffle drawing. • City water rates decreased. but increasing sewer and the implementation of a new storm drainage utility caused a slight increase in overall city utility rates. • Beekeepers Jim Strawn and Amy Philipsen captured a swarm of honeybees that had settled m a tree at the Post Office. • Arlie Elliott was named Sportsman's Holiday Parade' grand marshal. • Texan Bob Hanus traveled through Sweet Home on foot and dragging a cross as part of his ministry to spread God's Word. • The AmVets won the Sportsman's Holiday Parade sweepstakes. • Alyssa Logan was named 2008 Sportsman's Holiday Queen. • Two men who had crashed down an embankment on Buck Mountain were rescued by firefighters largely because they had a cell phone and were able to tell dispatchers when they heard sirens. The men were Lance Ryan and Larry The summer recreation season at Foster Lake took a dip in mid-July when U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of- ficials discovered problems with Foster Dam and dropped the reservoir's water level to winter pool. Barstad. both 37. • McCollum Logging took first place in the Logger Relay, snapping a Rice Logging winning streak. • Sweet Home hosted some 500 bicyclists who were riding to raise funds to fight multiple sclerosis. • The Corps of Engineers had to lower Foster Lake during the middle of the recreation season to perform additional inspections and emergency repairs, on Foster Dam. The lake was raised again and is now down undergoing major repairs to the first of its four gates. • The Elks Lodge agreed to sell its building on the south end of Osage Street to Sweet Home Charter School. The Elks are looking for a new. smaller building. August • Tristan Nichols of Sweet Home performed at the Oregon Jamboree after winning the Country Showdown at Linn Cotinty Fair.
