:t F T r,, - November 21,2012 _ Page 13 SPORTS SH coach, 00girls honored by q00i)regon swimming Junia Calhoon, head swim coach of the Sweet Home Swim Club, was awarded the Oregon Swimming "Excellence in Coach- ing, 2011-2012" award at the Or- egon Swimming Top Five Awards Banquet held Nov. 18 in Canby. Nominations and votes of fel- low swim club coaches are tabu- lated throughout the state for this award. "The quality of her coaching was recognized as rare in such a small community where Junia has managed to produce many state qualifiers and a state champion in 2012," said Bruce Davis, Swim Club president. " It was also men- tioned that she selflessly donated her time and gave up her salary for the good of the community pool last spring." Along with Calhoon's recog- nition, two swimmers of Sweet Home Swim Club were also rec- ognized as Oregon Top Five quali- tiers. Lauren Yon in the 11-12 age group was Top Five in the 200- yard breaststroke, the 100-meter breaststroke; the 200-meter breast- stroke and the 400-meter Individu- al Medley. Lucie Davis in the 11-12 age group was Top Five in the 1000- and 1650-yard (mile) freestyle and was Top Five in the 13-14 age group in the 200-, 400, 800 and 1500-meter freestyle events. Froemke, who transferred to Sweet Home from West Albany as a junior, is the first Husky of the Class of 2013 to sign a letter of intent to compete at the college level. She signed during a ceremony held in the school library, with her parents 3ill and Jay Froemke and coach Am- ber Rosa with her at the table. She said she applied to a num- ber of universities and colleges that offer the sport, a new one created five years ago specifically to give women opportunities in college ffth- letics. Azusa Pacific (along with the University of Oregon) was one of the founding members of the Na- tional Collegiate Stunts and Tum- bling Association. "They' re one of the few schools to offer acrobatics and tumbling," said Breanna Froemke, who plans to major in exercise science, with a minor in psychology. She said she has been involved in cheer for 10 years, both in high school and as a member of the Or- egon Dream Team in Portland, con- sidered the top club cheer program See APU, page 15 Huskyalums round-up for fall sports Following is a brief round-up of the whereabouts and some achieve- ments of Sweet Home High School alumni competing in college sports: Cassandra Schumaeher (grad- uated 2006), a senior at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, finished 66th overall and fourth for the Urban Knights at the PacWest Cross-Country Championships, held Oct. 27 at the Kahuku Golf Course in Oahu, Hawaii.
