Tolle takes top honors as Forestry q?.:lub warms up for state Kristen Tolle led the Sweet Home Forestry Club with Overall Jill and Technical Forester honors Saturday, April 28, at the Sabin/ Shellenburg Center Skills Camp competition. "We took 18 students and everyone placed in at least one area of competition," said club Advisor Dustin NichoL "I was proud of how they competed. Many of the members competed in events that they normally don't compete in." Tolle placed first in Timber Cruising, Open Pole Climb and Log Scaling; second in First Aid, Power Bucking and Hose Lay; and third in Jack/Jill Crosscut and Tree Identification to lead Sweet Home. Other individual events winners for Sweet Home were Julie Morgan in Novice Pole Climb. EJ Nichol in First Aid, and Justin Wolfe in First Aid and in Arbor Climbing. Morgan also placed second in Arbor, third in Novice Log Roll and sixth in Hose Lay. Nichol was second in Hose Lay and sixth in Jack/Jack Crosscut to go along with his win. Wolfe was also second in Hose Lay, sixth in Jack/Jack Crosscut and third in Jack/Jill Crosscut. Other placewinners were: Cody Froman, third in Log Scaling and fifth in Crosscut and Tool Identification: Curtis Froman, sixth in Hose Lay and fifth in Crosscut: Carl Steinborn, fifth in Novice log Roll and sixth in Hose Lay; Konrid Tacket, sixth in Hose Lay; Russell Anderson, sixth in Novice Log Roll; Cayla Coonc, sixth in Hose Lay; Devin Bruce, second in Animal Identification and third in Novice Pole Climb; Macy Cockrell, second in First Aid, Log Scaling and Hose Lay, fifth in Map Reading and fourth in Power Buck; Kourtney Dixon, second in Hose Lay and Open Pole Climb; Emily Clayborn, fourth in Jill/ Jill Crosscut; Kolbee Credille, fourth in Jack/Jill Crosscut; Bryson Denver, third in Animal ID; Sequia Stroup, fourth in Jack/ Jill Crosscut, Axe Throw and Jill/ Jill Crosscut; and Jesse Davis, second in Novice Pole Climb and fourth in Novice Log Roll. Dustin Nichol said the club is preparing for the state competition, to be held this Friday and Saturday at Oregon State University's Arboretum. running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The club placed second last year and Nichol said the potential is there to do as well or better. "We have an opportunity to place very high in state this year,'" he said. Alleged assault on mother leads to arrest A Sweet Home-area man was arrested Saturday, April 28, after allegedly assaulting his 79-year-old mother, Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller said. Mueller said deputies responded at 12:45 p.m. Saturday to 28444 Liberty Road near Sweet Home after a report of a disturbance. Joyce Ritterbush. 79, reported that her 50-year-old son, Chris Walnum, who lives in a travel trailer on the property, had assaulted her. Ritterbush said her son suffers from mental illness and was armed with a shotgun and pistol. She told officers that Walnum had pointed the firearms at her and had struck her with one of the guns in the head. leaving a cut on her forehead. Deputies responded to the location and found there were several different residences at the listed ad- dress and evacuated all of the residents then secured the area and attempted to talk Walnum into exiting his residence. Walnum barricaded himself inside his 26- foot travel trailer and refused repeated calls by depu- ties to come out. After a 2-1/2-hour standoff, deputies and officers from the Al- bany, Sweet Home, and Lebanon Police Departments assigned to the Linn County Regional SWAT Team gained entry into the residence and took Walnum into custody without incident. Walnum was taken to the Lebanon Hospi- tal for an evaluation and Chris Walnum later lodged at the Linn County Jail on charges of Assault II, two counts of As- sault IV, four counts of Menacing, and five counts of Pointing a Firearm at Another. Charred 'Vette Firefighters finish extinguish- ing afire in a burning Corvette. They received the call to 41947 North River Drive at 10:29 a.m. on Monday. The fire destroyed the car, which hadn't been driven for 24 hours. Smoke and flames were showing when they arrived. A neighbor had al- ready put much of the fire out with a garden hose. Photo by Chris Pinto Fire Women's duck contest to float Saturday Sweet Home Fire Women's or a"Carrot Stix" fishing rod ($150 Association will hold its second annual Duck Race at 2 p.m. Satur- day, May 5, at Northside Park at the north end of 1 lth Avenue. Participants can purchase a d.uck for $5 or get five for $20. Tickets for the ducks are on sale at the Sweet Home Fire and Ambu- lance District, 1099 Long St. The ducks will be released upriver and the first 14 to cross the finish line pay off for their owners. Organizers expect between 300 and 400 ducks to make the float. Prizes range from a pair of one-day Oregon Jamboree tickets value) to a $125 Scentsy basket, with a wide variety of exercise and beauty packages, coffee coupons and more mixed in. Funds raised this year will go toward sponsoring a scholarship for a female high school senior who is pursuing a career in the medical field. The ducks are expected to ar- rive at North Side Park around 3 p.m. There are 14 prizes for the first 14 ducks to cross the finish line. Activities for youngsters are planned while the ducks make their float. Winners need not be present.
