quarters, the route heads south and
ends at the P Ranch just a mile east
of Frenchglen.
On this trip I opted instead to
take the Ruh-Red Road just north
of the refuge since that area had
lots of open water. Highlights along
the gravel road included more than
a dozen great blue herons in one
flooded field, several tundra swans,
a dozen or so American white peli-
cans, lots of northern shovelers and
several thousand snow geese and
Ross's geese. A handful of greater
white-fronted geese also made an
appearance.
One of the most common
ducks I saw was the northern pin-
tail, a strikingly beautiful bird with
a needle-pointed tail. A conspicuous
white point runs onto the side of its
dark head. A lone pair of cinnamon
teal swam among the many Ameri-
can coots.
I made my way back to High-
way 78 where, earlier this year, I got
to see my first snowy owl. This bird
has since made its way back north
but I did get to see another pair of
nesting great-horned owls in a cot-

The 31 st Annual John Scharff
Migratory Bird Festival will be
held April 12-15. The festival offers
non-stop birding activities as well
as historical and cultural infOrma-
tion. I attended one of the festivals
several years ago and had a great
experience.
During the festival, there are
over a dozen tours that last from
two to nine hours. Birders will see
shorebirds, waterfowl, cranes, rap-
tars, wading birds and songbirds.
One of my favorite tours was the
High Listing Tour, now called
the Extreme Birding Tour. Expert
guides take birders out in the basin
and up into the snow-covered for-
est from sunup to sundown to list
as many species as possible, with a
goal of 100. Our group saw about
85 species. Highlights included bur-
rowing owls, snow geese, sandhill
cranes, barn owl, ferruginous hawk
and Savannah sparrow.
Other tours include Birds of
Prey, Digital Photography, Birding
the Floodplain, Waterfowl ID in the
Field, Sage Grouse Lek Visit and
the Steens Mountain/Alvord Desert
Loop where birders will also learn
about other wildlife and geology.
For more information on the festi-
val go to www.migratorybirdfesti-
val.com.
Whether you're an expert bird-
er, beginning birder or not a birder
at all, it's an amazing experience to
see so many birds in one place.
