SLCH offers free art programs for cancer survivors
Cancer survivors who have
received treatment at Samaritan
Lebanon Community Hospital can
learn fun art skills through four free
workshops throughout the month
of March.
ArtsCare, a partnership be-
tween Samaritan Health Services
and the Arts Center in Corvallis,
will host the workshops on Satur-
days in March for cancer survivors,
as well as their caregivers. Artists
from the Arts Center will lead the
workshops, which will run from 10
a.m. to noon at the hospital.
The schedule includes:
Saturday, March 3, Con-
ference Room E: Learn freestyle
painting with Lucy Johnson. Lucy
is an arts educator from Albany
who has taught art throughout the
region and in Australia and Turkey.
Saturday, March 10, Confer-
ence Room 3: Join Michelle Flamez
for a lesson in card-making. Mi-
chelle has been teaching craft-type
arts including scrapbooking, card-
making and stamps for 14 years.
Saturday, March 17, Confer-
ence Room E: Leetra Taylor will
have a St. Patrick's Day surprise!
Leetra specializes in doll-making,
and she enjoys bringing this type of
art into schools.
Saturday, March 24, Confer-
ence Room E: Jan Wilcox will lead
an exercise with hand-made paper.
Jan is a master of basket-making
and weaving, and she is known
for her love and imaginative use of
natural materials.
Saturday, March 31, Confer-
ence Room E: Learn how to make
garden tiles with Holly Dubrasich,
who owns Leaf in the Wind Studios
in Lebanon. Holly works with di-
alysis patients on a weekly basis
and sells her pottery throughout the
Northwest.
The goal of ArtsCare is to en-
hance the health care experience
for patients, visitors and employees
by integrating art and music into
the health care setting.

the program, including how you

Contest Director
For a holiday weekend we
had a good turnout for the weigh-
in, although it wasn't a pretty one
for weight loss.
As contestants dig in for long
haul, they are finding out why
we don't normally recommend
weighing yourself weekly, but it's
a contest so it's part of the deal,
right?
When it comes to success
of the program, here is a very
important piece that we don't
want anyone to miss: Those who
are keeping track of their weight
loss project are having the most
success overall and when this
contest is over, they will have
the tools and knowledge to help
them continue losing weight and
then maintaining their weight
loss once they have achieved
their goal.

This Lose
for Life contest
has been such
a blessing.
For so long
I had kind of
"given up" on
i I
trying to lose weight. I have
always enjoyed hiking, biking,
etc, but have had to pack around
the extra pounds as_l..enjoyed. .
these activities.
I honestly hadn't even
gotten on a scale in probably
years before the contest, but
felt depressed about my weight
and how I looked.
I've been in the same size
for the past is or so years, but my
clothes were fitting differently in
the last year, and I was getting
more of a stomach. A friend kept
bugging me to do the Lose for
Life with her, and I finally said
yes. I'm SO glad I did!
r've been working out with
Vicki twice a week and receiving
nutritional counseling from her,
working out with friends and
working out independently. It has
taken a lot of time commitment,
but honestly, I'm making up or
lost time!
My husband and kids have
been really supportive of me
as I leave to go work out most
evenings. I feel SO much betted
I have more energy, I feel thinner
(I know I still have a long way
to got.), and my formerly tight-
fitting pants are loose!
I'm wear- ....

a year and
they fit and are
loose! Hard
to believe/ I'm down 20-plus
pounds so far and am on my
way to my long-term goal of
losing 100 pounds. Thank you,
Lord, for giving me self control
and helping me to persevere!

Daniella Simonson:
Giving up sugar is hard.
About six hours in I as prowling
my house, anxious and irritable.
About . 18 hours in ,L, .was
completely unfocused.
My coworkers were not sure
they would be able to handle
me not eating sugar. At over
48 hours I am starting to taste
the difference. I didn't realize
tortillas had sugar in them.
When I bit into one it tasted
sweet, like a pastry. I was a little
shocked.
I will not eat the sugary
treats.
I will stay away. I won't eat
sweets.
I will not touch my son's
cupcake.
I will not snack on treats I
baked.
I will not eat those Oreos.
I'll walk right by; turn up my
nose.
I will not eat them here or
there.
I will not eat them
anywhere.
I will not eat those sugary
treats.
I'll stay away. I won't eat
sweets.
