tT, ,, ra - February 15, 2012 Page 15 Outdoors: Turn in your tag and (maybe) win a drift boat Anglers who turn in their 2011 combined angling tag before May 18, 2012 could win one of 100 outdoor products, including a complete drift boat package. ODFW is sponsoring the promotion to try to increase the number of returned tags. Current- ly, the department estimates, only 20 percent of anglers return their combined tags, which are required to fish for salmon, steelhead, stur- geon and Pacific halibut. "We get a lot of important harvest information from harvest tags," said John Seabourne, op- erations manager for the ODFW Fish Division. The information is used to determine harvest rates and fish- ing effort in Oregon's salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, and halibut fisheries. The information is also posted on the ODFW website where anglers can check the har- vest rates from their favorite wa- ter bodies. Anglers who return their tags by the May 18 deadline will be en- tered into a drawing for a chance to win a 16-foot Fish Rite drift boat package or one of 99 name- brand outdoor products from Bi-Mart. ODFW has for several years had a drift boat drawing to encourage tag returns. This year the number of prizes has been increased through a partnership with Bi-Mart. The drawing will be held June 8. To ensure their name is en- tered in the drawing, anglers should return completed tags to any ODFW office or mail to ODFW Tag Returns, 3406 Cherry Ave. NE, Salem, OR. 97303. Tags also can be returned to any fishing or hunting license agent. The 20th annual Frontier Heritage Fair is being held Satur- day and Sunday, Feb. 18-19, at the Lane County Fairgrounds Audito- rium, 796 W. 13th Ave., Eugene. The focus will be pre-1898 America, including the mountain men, Civil War and Old West eras. Sponsored by the Fort Um- pqua Muzzleloaders of Spring- field, the event will include arti- facts and replicas of the period, on disllay and for sale, and activities for youngsters, including spin- ning, basketry, arrow making and a foot-powered wood lathe. Show times are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3 for ages 12 and over; kids under 12 is free. By Dave Bauer Contest Director We are one third of the way through the Lose for Life weight loss contest and already our contestants have lost over 4901bs! This is great news in the battle against obesity! Overall, weight loss numbers were up and back on track this week. Most who saw a gain last week were relieved to find themselves with a negative number again. Kristen Forum lost the highest percentage for the week with 3.0 percent and Patrick Ward was the highest for the men at 2.5 percent. This week we also took measurements for waist-to- hip ratio, which is used for determining health risk. Most of the contestants experienced a drop in their measurements and, as a result, a drop in their health risk. THIS is what Lose for Life is all about. This week's incentive prize winner was Alycia Hardin who won a $50 gift certificate to Les Schwab Tire. Center of Sweet Home. Congratulations to Alycia and our Lose for Life contestants for having a great week! After the weigh-in Dr. Tim Hindmarsh gave an excellent presentation on the poor health condition of our society and how we got here, awareness of our influences, and the process of training ourselves for change. Goal Setting and Motivation will be the topics of the second talk in his series, to be presented on at 9:30 a.m. on March 25. If you are serious about making permanent weight loss changes, these seminars are for you. Each Saturday seminar is open to the public and free. Lose For Life Contest Leaders Kristen Forum 3.0% Patrick Ward 2.5% Morgan Hansen 2.4% Rick Picardo 2.3% Laretta Savri 2.3% Top Team by Weight Loss Percentage Red Team 0.7% The Lose for Life team supports healthy lifestyle changes and welcomes your participation and your questions at these events. This Saturday Dr. Megan Sturdy, who has a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry, will speak about the basics of nutrition. Because so much of your success to live healthy is tied to proper eating, it is critical to understand the nutrition in the food you eat. Join us on Saturday morning for the talk and then an informal Q&A session after. The talk starts at 9:30 a.m. at the SHHS cafeteria. Here's some feedback from one of our contestants, Gina Riley: PROCRASTINATION/// That's what got me here, sorta. . . You go to your doctor. He tells you the best way to get healthy is to eat right and exercise... Isn't there another way...??? Easier??? Funner??? Faster Results// Maybe one of those fat-melting pills? You shrug it off and decide you will start "Next Week, Next Month, Next Year"... LATER... I'm not that old - I don't FREE WELLNESS SEMI- NAR EACH WEEK Open to the public This Saturday: Nutrition eat that bad/l/ I choose to not exercise because I don't want BIG muscles// I have the rest of my life...right???? And what does he know anyways/// Then, last September at work ... totally unexpected- I have a stroke// I'm 50 years young/// I black out/ I lose my eyesight in one eye//I'm scared/// I'm whisked off the hospital.., go through a barrage of testing/// Then I discover (because I don't pay attention when I go to the doctor) that I have high blood pressure ( which probably contributed to the stroke), high cholesterol (because I eat all that crap/), high blood sugar(because I like starch and sugad/). They even go as far as to say "YOU ARE A DIABETIC//" The cardiologist looks at me and says, "You're too young to be in this situation. Time to take care of your body - you need to get healthy - NOW/" Kind of a slap in the face///I needed it/ Afterfour months, I am finally released to do some activity - just in time for Lose for Life/ I didn't enter this contest to WIN. I entered to be accountable - to "MYSELF"/// I truly believe that I need to look at this as a life changing event.., not just a contest...not a diet.., not something that is going to go away in 12 weeks when we are done... I am going to do my best to accept your (contest organizers') challenge, "GET HOOKED. I want exercise to become as natural as going to work every day. I have to admit, I was a bit intimidated when I first started going to the gym because everyone there appeared to NOT need to be there. Most of them are skinny, look athletic, in shape, seem to know what they are doing, know how to use the equipment. One machine at a time, Riley, one machine at a time. I now knowthat they are there because theyare COMMITTED/// To THEMSELVES// I want to get healthy and get off these reeds/! Here's to COMMITMENT// THANKS/!!!!/!
